Alere Modern began its journey from an idea to a reality in early 2009 when founder Caitlin Sullivan became increasingly frustrated trying to find perfect handmade earrings. Internet searches didn’t yield enough options and searches in marketplace sites had entirely too many options, none all that close to what she was looking for. Additionally every item came with a plethora of questions. Is the seller reputable? Is the item of good quality? Will I actually receive it? Will I like it? If I don’t can I return or exchange it? Caitlin found herself wishing that someone would just collect the “cream of the crop” when it came to handmade, put it on a single site, and create what would be the go-to site for what she deems “modern craft.” And so, the concept for Alere Modern was born.
Now, having gathered a pool of talented artists producing beautiful, high-quality pieces, we are excited to be able to share our finds with the world. Alere comes from the Latin word meaning “to support; nourish; create” and that is exactly how we see our role in the lives of the artists on our site. We want to enable customers who believe in the value of handmade, who appreciate a quality handmade piece, to find the artists who make them. We want to enable our artists to continue to create, because ultimately that is what they do best.
For you, our customers, we will do our best to provide you with a collection of arts and crafts that will feel at home in your modern home. These are not your grandmother’s afghans (though if we find someone making incredible modern afghans, you can be sure we will ask them to be a part of the site), nor her “Home Sweet Home” signs. These pieces are beautiful, luxurious, and modern. We have carefully selected each of our artists based on the quality of their work and their aesthetic, and we hope you enjoy the collection we have brought to you: our handmade luxury.
We are always looking for new artists. If you are interested in being one of the artists on AlereModern.com, please send an email to email@example.com and include a sample of your work.
